Assumptions
  • 4–8 analyst hours per quarterly review today; 0.5–1 hours with an agent, including review
  • 4–28 quarterly reviews a year for one team
  • $150–250 per hour loaded cost
  • Tool or build cost $20,000–100,000 a year (both)

What else it can do for the team

  • Flag PIK switches on names you hold
  • Compute PIK share of income by manager
  • Feed switches into the early-warning brief
  • Draft the research note
  • Track PIK reversals back to cash
How you get thereFour steps from prompting to an agentic workflow; most teams start at step 2.
1 · PromptingAn analyst asks a chat tool about one quarterly review.
Needs: an approved AI tool, a confidentiality policy.
Risk: unchecked answers, data pasted outside policy.
2 · WorkflowA fixed pipeline extracts the same fields into your template every time.
Needs: field definitions, a template, document parsing.
Risk: breaks silently when formats change.
Typical starting point
3 · AgentIt watches the inbox or data room, runs the checks and drafts the output.
Needs: inbox/doc-store access, system write-back, logging.
Risk: acting on a misread; needs review gates.
The automated lane above
4 · Agentic workflowSeveral agents work across the deal or book; people approve exceptions.
Needs: shared data model, permissions, audit trail, exception queue.
Risk: errors compound across steps; needs monitoring.
Solution optionsBuy (2 vendors listed), build or hybrid, with the trade-offs of each.
Buy
The LoanEdge, Standd
Fastest start; you adapt to the product's data model and pricing.
Build
An LLM API, a document parser, a vector or document store, your data warehouse, and a review queue.
Fits your definitions exactly; you own maintenance and controls.
Hybrid
Vendor extraction feeding your own checks, templates and systems.
Common middle path; two things to integrate and govern.

How it works

Full title: Cash to PIK, caught in the filing: flag every loan that switched to paying in kind this quarter

“Octus counted 48 loans that flipped to PIK in Q2. Your agent should find them in the 10-Q the day it's filed.”

Scenario

Public: the day a BDC files its 10-Q, an analyst wants every holding whose interest terms changed from cash to at least partial PIK versus the prior quarter's Schedule of Investments.

What the human still decides

Whether a switch is negotiated stress or a pre-agreed toggle. The filings often don't say; the agent marks it 'unclear' rather than guessing.

Why it matters

Octus counted 48 loans ($2.5bn) switching to at least partial PIK in Q2, up from 32 ($1.3bn) in Q1, with software the largest group. The SEC staff statement of 28 Sep 2026 names PIK disclosure as a best practice where PIK is a growing share of income.

What the record shows

Checked 2026-10-15.

Octus counted 48 loans ($2.5bn) switching to at least partial PIK in Q2 2026, up from 32 ($1.3bn) in Q1, at an average price of 92.1% of par; software led. Moody's says counting PIK amendments and extensions lifts the default rate on 607 credit-estimate borrowers from 4.0% to 5.8%. Identifier text alone is noisy: in HTGC's 30 Jun 2026 SOI, 55 holdings ($1.78bn, about 39% of fair value) mention PIK, most of them contractual PIK tranches rather than switches. The agent has to diff quarters, not grep once.

Try it: prompt and data
Compare the June 30 and March 31, 2026 Schedules of Investments for {BDC}. List every position whose interest terms moved from all-cash to any PIK component (or back), with both rate descriptions, both marks and links to both filings. If you cannot match a position confidently, say so.

“—”: no cash-to-PIK switch flagged by the diff for that filer (HTGC’s SOI does not print a separate PIK rate the diff can compare).

Computed by us from every row of each filer’s Schedule of Investments for the period ended 30 Jun 2026 (the filer’s own non-accrual footnote and printed PIK column/rate). Shares are of the 10-Q’s total cost and fair value (rows tie to those totals within ±0.5%), so they can differ from the rate a BDC states in its MD&A. Not investment advice.

FAQ

What is PIK income?
Payment-in-kind interest is added to the loan balance instead of being paid in cash. BDCs print a PIK rate or a cash/PIK split for each position in the Schedule of Investments.
What does “rows with a PIK component” measure?
The share of SOI fair value in positions whose printed terms include any PIK interest at 30 June 2026. It is a holdings measure, not the share of investment income received as PIK.
What is a cash-to-PIK switch?
A position that paid cash interest last quarter and prints a PIK component this quarter, found by matching the same position across two consecutive Schedules of Investments.
Is a high PIK share a sign of stress?
Not by itself. Some loans are structured with PIK from day one; a switch from cash to PIK on an existing loan is the stronger signal, which is why both are shown.
